In the mid- to late 1800s, a “conspiracy of good” permeated the streets of Columbia as citizens helped freedom seekers navigate the Underground Railroad. William Wright, one of the town founders and a fervent abolitionist, is often credited with helping to establish the path to freedom for people escaping slavery.
The Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will be located at 331 Locust Street, a short walk from the Wright’s Ferry Mansion, the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, the 1869 Market House and other historic structures.

The Underground Railroad Center of Columbia Pennsylvania is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The organization was established in 2023 to create an 8,000 sq. ft. museum attraction to interpret and promote the role of Columbia in the American Abolitionist movement, and to utilize leading-edge exhibit design and technology to engage visitors and tell the story of the Underground Railroad in Pennsylvania. The Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is targeting 2026 for its public opening.
